UriSed 3 PRO automated microscope in screening bacteriuria at region-wide laboratory organization

Abstract Background and aims We assessed the possibility to rule out negative urine cultures by counting with UriSed 3 PRO (77 Elektronika, Hungary) at Helsinki Uusimaa Hospital District. Materials methods Bacteria of automated microscope was verified reference phase contrast microscopy against growth in culture. After acceptance into routine, results bacteria leukocyte from 56 426 specimens eight instruments were compared parallel samples cultured on chromogenic agar. Laboratory data including preanalytical details accessed through regional database Results A combined sensitivity 87–92% a predictive value 90–96% specificity 54–50% reached, depending criteria. Preanalytical (incubation time bladder) way collection would improve these figures if reliable. Conclusions Complex patient populations, logistics interfases, economics related increased costs additional particle counts screening all samples, did not support adaptation process cultures. This conclusion made locally, may be valid elsewhere.

We evaluated a new automated urine sediment analyzer that provides whole-field images for the screening of urine samples prior to bacterial culture. Sterile urine samples from 1,011 male and female outpatients and inpatients (mean age 54.7) with a urinary tract infection prevalence of 18.3% were studied.
